Antarctic Krill Oil: What Makes It Different from Fish Oil?

posted in: Blog | 0

Most people know they should be eating oily fish, but plenty of us don’t manage the two portions a week the NHS suggests. That’s where many people look at an omega-3 food supplement, and krill oil is one of the most popular choices alongside traditional fish oil.

What is krill oil?

Krill are tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that live in the very cold waters of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. The oil extracted from them is naturally rich in two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

How is it different from fish oil?

  • Phospholipids – much of the omega-3 in krill oil is carried in phospholipid form, the same type of fat that makes up cell membranes. Each of our capsules provides 200mg of marine phospholipids.
  • Astaxanthin – a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment that gives krill (and our capsules) their deep red colour.
  • Smaller capsules – 500mg softgels that are easy to swallow, and customers tell us there’s no fishy aftertaste.

What’s in each capsule?

Each 1 Life Antarctic Krill Oil capsule provides 500mg of Antarctic krill oil (Euphausia superba), giving 60mg EPA, 40mg DHA, 200mg total marine phospholipids and 100μg astaxanthin. There are 60 capsules in every tub, made in the UK.

Who is it for?

Krill oil suits anyone who wants a convenient marine source of omega-3 alongside their diet, particularly if oily fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines rarely make it onto the plate. As krill is a crustacean, it isn’t suitable for anyone with a shellfish allergy, vegetarians or vegans.

Prefer a broader blend? Our Omega 3-6-9 Oils combine fish, flaxseed and sunflower oils with vitamin E.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical supervision, speak to your GP or pharmacist before use.
